Djokovic appeals to Home Office for Becker's return to Wimbledon after opening victory

Novak Djokovic calls for Boris Becker’s return to Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic has urged the Home Office to permit Boris Becker’s return to British soil following his opening victory at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, reports BritPanorama.

The Serbian star overcame Wu Yibing 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday evening and made an impassioned case for his former mentor after progressing to the second round.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion expressed his desire to see the German legend back at the All England Club, where Becker remains barred from entry. Djokovic believes authorities should reconsider the ban on one of tennis’s most celebrated figures as he pursues a record-breaking 25th major title.

Becker, a three-time Wimbledon champion, was removed from the United Kingdom in December 2022 after serving eight months of a thirty-month custodial sentence for tax evasion and concealing assets, which resulted in his deportation. The German has disclosed that negotiations with the Home Office regarding a potential return are ongoing, though these discussions have thus far proved fruitless.

Prior to his imprisonment, Becker was a familiar presence on the BBC’s coverage of the Championships, making his absence from SW19 all the more conspicuous. Djokovic revealed he had been in contact with Becker ahead of the tournament, seeking clarity on his friend’s circumstances.

“Actually texted with him before Wimbledon. I asked him what’s the situation because I don’t know if he has permission to come into UK or not. Unfortunately still not,” the Serbian said. The pair collaborated for three years, a period Djokovic described as “probably my best time of my career, most success.” He added, “Boris for me is a very dear friend, and I really care about him and his family. I sincerely hope he’ll be able to be allowed to come back.”

Becker’s connection to the All England Club remains unparalleled among his generation, having claimed the gentlemen’s singles title in 1985, 1986, and 1989. “He’s the youngest-ever men’s champion. He has a special connection to this place. I don’t know if this can help. I hope that the authorities will consider that,” Djokovic remarked.

The Serbian’s campaign continues with a second-round encounter against Stefanos Tsitsipas, the former French Open finalist. Should Djokovic prevail at SW19 this fortnight, he would secure an eighth Wimbledon crown, drawing level with Roger Federer’s record at the Championships.

As the tournament unfolds, Djokovic’s plea highlights the often-overlapping worlds of sport and personal relationships, reminding us that every victory on the court comes entwined with stories of friendship and loyalty.
