Dame Laura Kenny recalls first Olympic gold medal moment
Dame Laura Kenny has shared her memories of winning her first Olympic gold medal at London 2012, describing it as a “dream come true,” one she will never forget, reports BritPanorama.
In an interview, Ms Kenny noted that the experience felt surreal, almost as if she were “living someone else’s life.” She recounted the moment she collected her medal, where Paul McCartney unexpectedly began singing “Hey Jude,” creating an unforgettable atmosphere as thousands joined in.
Reflecting on the significance of that first gold medal, she recognized it as a standout achievement amid her successful career. Kenny conveyed that despite winning multiple medals, the emotional weight of the first victory resonates the most.
“It was a dream come true and on home turf as well. I obviously grew up around there. So for me it was just so special. I had so many people there,” she said.
Shifting the conversation, Ms Kenny also discussed her upcoming role at Crufts, where she will present an award. She highlighted a new initiative by Crufts involving a dog census intended to include all breeds, an endeavor she passionately supports due to her own experience with crossbreed dogs. “It’s just really important that we’re inclusive of all animals because ultimately we care about their health and well-being,” she stated.
As Dame Laura Kenny prepares for this year’s Crufts, her reflections on that golden moment serve as a reminder of the lasting impact of sporting triumph — how fleeting victories can forge unforgettable memories, blending the personal and the public in the most celebrated of ways.
