The injury occurred when McGregor attempted an ambitious jumping roundhouse kick early in the fight, causing his knee to give way. Following the stoppage, referee Mike Beltran awarded Holloway a TKO victory, marking a disappointing return for the former two-division champion following a lengthy layoff.
The 38-year-old fighter revealed that he sustained an “ACL and meniscus” injury—similar to a previous ailment from his first encounter with Holloway, albeit in the opposite leg. His latest injury raises questions about his capacity to return to competition at this late stage in his career.
Taking to social media, McGregor expressed his surprise at the injury, stating: “I returned to competition within nine months to fight Diego Brandao back then. With today’s regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods, it is well within my realm to return by next summer.” He indicated optimism about his recovery, stating he is walking without a crutch and engaging in leg exercises without issue. McGregor also noted the potential for the situation to have been worse, reflecting on the path he might have taken after the match.
In his emotional assessment post-fight, McGregor shared, “I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.” Earlier in his career, he fought through a similar injury against Holloway in 2013 and still managed to secure a decision victory. In contrast, this latest setback introduces a new layer of complexity as he approaches his 38th birthday, raising uncertainties about whether a further comeback is feasible.
McGregor’s past injury recovery timeline involved a surgical repair performed by famed physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache, from which he returned to action within 11 months.
