Christian Danner warns Christian Horner against F1 return
Former Formula One driver Christian Danner has cautioned Christian Horner against attempting a return to the sport, warning that the ex-Red Bull chief would “destroy” the established hierarchy at any leading team he might join, reports BritPanorama.
Horner, 52, was dismissed from his dual positions as team principal and chief executive at Red Bull last summer, formally departing the Milton Keynes operation in September 2025 after negotiating a substantial severance package. Since his exit, persistent rumours have swirled about a potential comeback with a rival outfit as soon as next season.
Danner, the 68-year-old German who raced in F1 during the 1980s, has firmly dismissed such prospects, telling OLBG that Horner would be far better off simply enjoying his considerable payout. He systematically ruled out each of the grid’s front-running teams as a viable destination, asserting that Horner would disrupt their structures. “If you say McLaren, he’s going to destroy the structure they’ve got,” he cautioned.
Ferrari, too, was deemed an implausible option. Danner remarked, “I don’t think Fred’s going to have him because Fred is going to stay either as the boss or he’s not going to stay,” referencing team principal Frederic Vasseur. The prospect of Horner arriving and overhauling an existing operation struck Danner as counterproductive, adding, “Then he changes everything to make it different and complicated? No.”
Mercedes simply had no need for Horner’s services, Danner maintained, indicating that they “really don’t need him at all.” He highlighted the difficulties facing any outsider trying to integrate into an established team. Danner further questioned whether Horner’s achievements at Red Bull were transferable, suggesting the success at Milton Keynes was the product of a unique ecosystem rather than just one individual’s brilliance.
“It all kind of grew within an environment with Helmut Marko, with Dietrich [Mateschitz] still being in charge, with Adrian [Newey] still being his usual genius,” Danner observed. While acknowledging that Horner had “orchestrated it very well,” he cast doubt on whether that same formula would function elsewhere.
Danner admitted to a personal regard for Horner, saying, “I like Christian. I think, at the end of the day, he’s a personable lad,” but concluded that the complexities of a comeback would be too significant. His advice was blunt: “What does he do instead? Spend his money and have a good time. It’s what I would do!”
Horner’s departure marked the end of a remarkable two-decade tenure that began with Red Bull’s inaugural F1 campaign in 2005, during which he guided the team to numerous drivers’ and constructors’ championships. His sacking followed a period of declining performance linked to the fallout from a 2024 sexting scandal, of which he was cleared, but that triggered internal turmoil at the team.
Currently residing with his wife Geri Halliwell at a £9.2m property near Banbury, Horner has been connected with potential moves to Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Alpine, though none have materialised. Most recently, there have been reports suggesting a possible involvement in a prospective BYD Formula One entry. Danner, however, acknowledged that Aston Martin remained a conceivable landing spot, even if he remained sceptical about the wisdom of such a move.
