Christian Eriksen shares health update after pitch collapse
Christian Eriksen has confirmed he is “feeling good” following his collapse on the pitch during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine, reports BritPanorama. The former Tottenham midfielder stated that his “recovery has already started” after being released from hospital.
Eriksen expressed gratitude for the support he received from players and medical personnel on the field. “I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family,” he said, addressing the positive developments since his incident. “As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021.”
He also reflected on the role of the medical team, stating, “Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.” The 31-year-old former Manchester United player was transported from the pitch by ambulance after collapsing in the second half, prompting officials to call off the match, which Denmark was leading 2-1 at the time.
Broadcast footage captured the moment Eriksen placed his hand against his chest before collapsing, eliciting memories of the cardiac arrest incident he suffered during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in June 2021. On that occasion, swift medical action was crucial in stabilising his condition.
In his latest statement, Eriksen noted, “For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.” Following his recovery from the previous cardiac episode, he was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator, allowing him to return to professional football while playing for clubs like Brentford and Manchester United. He has currently made 31 appearances for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
Yet, Eriksen’s journey serves not just as a tale of personal resilience but also highlights the significance of health care in sports, a reminder of how fragile yet resilient human life can be in the arena of competitive athletics.
