Celtic's controversial penalty victory over Motherwell ignites fury from Hearts in title race

Controversial penalty reshapes Scottish Premiership title race

The controversial penalty that handed Celtic a dramatic victory over Motherwell has sparked fierce debate, with Hearts left furious after the Scottish Premiership title race was turned on its head, reports BritPanorama.

With Hearts on track for a 3-0 win over Falkirk, the team seemed poised to end its 66-year wait for a league title. Had Celtic dropped points against Motherwell, Hearts could have lost by two goals at Celtic Park on Saturday yet still emerged as champions.

However, a highly contentious VAR intervention in the 99th minute changed the course of the match. The incident involved Sam Nicholson challenging Celtic defender Auston Trusty for a high ball. Video assistant referee Andrew Dallas recommended that referee John Beaton review a potential handball by Nicholson.

Beaton reviewed the play for roughly 20 seconds before awarding the penalty. Kelechi Iheanacho converted it, securing a 3-2 win for Celtic, ensuring that the title race would go down to the final day. This decision has been met with widespread criticism.

Under the handball law, officials are more likely to penalise players with raised arms, as it is deemed a significant risk. Critics argue, however, that Nicholson’s arm was elevated only due to his physical duel with Trusty. The central issue remains whether the ball even struck Nicholson’s arm; many replays suggest it hit his head before going out of play, which raises further questions about the VAR’s intervention.

If there was ambiguity in the incident, it is difficult to understand how it could be classified as a “clear and obvious error” — the standard needed for VAR intervention. Even if the ball brushed Nicholson’s arm, many observers contend the contact had little impact on its trajectory, which appeared determined mostly by the header’s force.

Former footballer Gary Lineker described the decision as potentially “the worst VAR decision I’ve seen.” Hearts manager Derek McInnes was even more scathing, calling it “disgusting” and claiming his side felt “up against everybody.” Motherwell’s Jens Berthel Askou expressed his “total shock” at the ruling, while Celtic’s Martin O’Neill maintained it was a handball.

In the wake of this controversy, the title now hinges on Saturday’s pivotal match at Celtic Park, leaving Hearts to contemplate how a single VAR call could shape their season.

As drama unfolds at the top of the table, the debate over the efficacy of VAR’s intervention in football continues, reflecting broader tensions over fairness in the game.
