Carragher calls for significant punishment for Manchester City
Jamie Carragher has stated that Manchester City should face a punishment lasting several years if their appeal against a Premier League guilty verdict fails, reports BritPanorama.
An independent commission found the club guilty of serious financial breaches that spanned nine seasons, including the use of sponsorship agreements deemed to be sham arrangements. City has appealed, asserting that the decision is unsafe and that they are innocent of the accusations.
The former Liverpool defender contends that a points deduction lasting only one season would inadequately reflect the scale and duration of the breaches identified by the commission. “If people talk about a penalty of 80 points or 100 points, that’s just over one season that gets you relegated and then you come back again,” Carragher said during The Overlap Fan Debate with Sky Bet, adding that some players might even accept this for a year.
Given the longevity of the alleged misconduct, Carragher believes that the punishment should extend over several years, suggesting a timeframe of three to five years, which would compel players to move on.
The commission found that between 2009-10 and 2017-18, City misrepresented commercial agreements with some sponsors, which artificially inflated revenue and reduced costs. Additionally, the commission ruled against City on all charges relating to serious financial breaches and upheld three of the four charges concerning their cooperation with the Premier League’s investigation.
The case involves more than £830 million in funding recorded as sponsorship income during the nine-season span. City has consistently denied any wrongdoing and lodged an appeal on October 1, stating that the commission’s opinion contains “clear material errors” of law, principle, and fact and is “unsafe”.
The Premier League has indicated that any punishment will be dealt with separately, and as of now, no sanctions have been announced. City is set to face Liverpool at Anfield this weekend, a match that not only carries significant prestige but also comes during a tumultuous time for the club.
As the tension builds ahead of the showdown, the encounter between City and Liverpool is expected to be charged with the anticipation and scrutiny that encapsulate both clubs’ storied rivalry, revealing the interplay of sport and the high stakes of financial governance in football.
