Darting star Cameron Menzies has been taken off stage after falling ill while playing against Ross Smith, reports BritPanorama.
The Scotsman was throwing in the fourth leg and seemed faint while preparing on the oche. Menzies squatted on his knees as Ross Smith and officials attended to him, with Sky cameras diverting away from the scene at Winter Gardens in Blackpool.
It was later confirmed that Menzies would not return for his contest against Smith. Sky Sports’ Emma Paton provided an update stating: “We are having a break in our first match because Cameron Menzies is unwell. All we know at the moment is that he is being seen to by St John’s Ambulance. He is with some medics at the moment. Hopefully he is ok and feeling better very shortly.”
The PDC issued a statement confirming Menzies’ inability to continue, reading: “Cameron Menzies is unable to continue his Round Two clash after being taken unwell. Ross Smith progresses to the Quarter-Finals as a result. The next match between Gian van Veen and Wessel Nijman will start shortly.” Master of ceremonies Lewis Jones announced to the crowd that play would not proceed for the first game of the night.
Following the incident, Menzies was clarified as being cleared by medics, with Paton stating: “He is okay, but he will play no further part in tonight’s action.” The unexpected turn of events underscores the unpredictable nature of sports, where even the most dedicated athletes can find themselves sidelined at a moment’s notice.
