Bob Wilson criticises BBC's decision to cancel Football Focus after decades on air

BBC to scrap Football Focus after 52 years

Bob Wilson, who fronted Football Focus for two decades between 1974 and 1994, has branded the BBC’s decision to scrap the programme “crazy,” reports BritPanorama.

The 84-year-old former Arsenal goalkeeper expressed shock and sadness at the removal of what he considers a broadcasting institution. Football Focus has been a staple of British television for more than half a century.

The BBC confirmed on Thursday that Football Focus will be replaced next season by an interview-based programme exploring what motivates players. Wilson dismissed the new format, arguing that viewers are more interested in discussions surrounding “the big games of the weekend, the issues, the news of the week,” covering a range of clubs and personalities.

In recent years, audience numbers for the Saturday programme have significantly dwindled. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Football Focus attracted an average of 957,000 viewers, climbing to 1.12 million during the 2020-21 season. By 2022-23, however, that figure had dropped to just 687,000.

Online reactions to the announcement were largely critical, with users accusing the show of becoming overly political. Comments varied, with some supporting the decision, asserting that the show had become an “awful woke joke.”

Moreover, Alex Scott, who took over hosting duties in 2021, acknowledged via Instagram that she had already planned this to be her final season. She emphasized the changing media landscape, noting that when Football Focus first launched, social media was non-existent, adding context to the show’s evolution.

Dan Walker, who presented Football Focus for 12 years prior to Scott’s tenure, shared his dismay at the cancellation, stating it is a “disappointing” end to a programme that has meant “so much to so many people for so many years.”

The reshaping of BBC’s football coverage reflects broader shifts in audience preferences and the evolving media landscape. Yet, it also serves as a stark reminder of how much the sport’s tradition intertwines with viewer expectations.
