Barcelona agrees deal to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle
Barcelona has reached an agreement to acquire Anthony Gordon, with Newcastle reportedly accepting an offer of £70 million, reports BritPanorama.
The transfer deal will initially cost £60.6 million, with the potential for the total to rise to £70 million through performance-related add-ons, according to Fabrizio Romano. Gordon is expected to undergo a medical and complete contract formalities in Barcelona soon.
Newcastle had been in negotiations with Bayern Munich earlier this month, who had shown strong interest in the 25-year-old winger, but no formal agreement was established. Gordon has been sidelined as an unused substitute in Newcastle’s last four outings as the club prepares for his departure.
Having joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for approximately £40 million, Gordon has emerged as a key figure within the squad, scoring 17 goals across all competitions this season. He was also recently named in the England squad ahead of the World Cup set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Manager Eddie Howe previously conveyed confidence in Gordon’s commitment, despite any speculation regarding his future. “I feel Anthony remains 100 per cent committed to the club,” Howe stated. Gordon’s impressive performances following a recent hip injury further bolster his standing as one of the most highly regarded attacking talents in the Premier League.
As Gordon prepares for this major transition, the move reinforces the growing competitive landscape of European football. His developing rapport with the likes of his international teammates highlights the nuanced balance between individual ambition and club allegiance in the world of elite sport.
