Joey Mawson appears in court over sexual assault allegations
Australian racing driver Joey Mawson appeared before a court in Nyon, Switzerland on Tuesday to face accusations of sexually assaulting a nurse who provided medical care for Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, reports BritPanorama.
The alleged incident took place at Schumacher’s mansion in Gland, near Geneva, where Mawson is accused of assaulting the woman twice in a bedroom. Mawson has strenuously denied the allegations, maintaining that any sexual contact was consensual.
The nurse, part of the medical team looking after Schumacher, claims she awoke in pain on blood-stained bedsheets following the alleged assault. She testified that she had been working for six consecutive days and consumed alcohol during an evening spent with several staff members, including Mawson. Witnesses stated she became so intoxicated she could not stand and had to be carried to her bedroom while still fully dressed.
Upon regaining consciousness, the nurse reported being unclothed with no recollection of the events prior. Prosecutors allege the assault occurred in that room. In his defense, Mawson claimed that she was alert and flirtatious throughout the evening, stating, “She was not intoxicated, she was alert and conscious, she was flirting and she managed to get her leg on the pool table. You could see from her body language she was being flirtatious.”
During the court proceedings, Mawson acknowledged sending an apologetic message to the nurse, specifying, “Because I was overwhelmed by the accusations against me. It was the gentlemanly thing to do but I had done nothing wrong.” Discrepancies in Mawson’s statements were highlighted by prosecutor Xavier Christe, who pointed out contradictions regarding the use of contraception during the incident.
Mawson maintains a close friendship with Mick Schumacher and has competed in Formula 1 with Haas, frequently staying with the Schumacher family between races. The court was informed that no members of the Schumacher family are connected to the allegations, with none present during the alleged events and no family members appearing on the witness list at Nyon District Court.
The case underscores the serious nature of allegations within the sporting world, revealing the complex interplay of personal conduct and professional relationships in high-stakes environments. In a sport known for its glamour and intensity, such incidents remind us that beneath the surface, the lives of those involved can be shadowed by controversy.
