Arsenal shift focus from Julian Alvarez as Atletico Madrid striker expected to stay in Spain

Arsenal’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez cools

Arsenal have cooled their pursuit of Julian Alvarez and begun examining alternative attacking targets, with the Atletico Madrid striker now expected to remain in Spain, reports BritPanorama.

The Gunners had previously considered bringing the Argentina international back to the Premier League as Mikel Arteta sought to bolster his forward line. Their optimism increased when Alvarez missed three consecutive days of training with what was described as an “illness,” which suggested a potential late move could be possible.

However, the latest reports indicate that Arsenal are now less hopeful about finalising a deal unless Alvarez makes a last-minute change to his situation. Consequently, the club has shifted its focus to other prospects rather than pursuing an agreement they believe is unlikely to materialise.

While Alvarez desires a move away from Atletico after a challenging spell with Diego Simeone, his preferred destination remains Barcelona, rather than a return to England. Atletico are firmly against strengthening a domestic rival and are disinclined to sell the forward to the Catalan side.

This position complicates Alvarez’s aspirations for a transfer and leaves him facing the prospect of remaining in Madrid past the transfer deadline. Arsenal’s interest had initially been serious, with club officials undertaking a thorough assessment of the former Manchester City star.

Data gathered included Alvarez’s injury history, physical metrics, and attacking contributions, all of which were deemed favourable for fitting Arteta’s system. Despite these positives, a breakthrough has yet to be achieved, as Alvarez’s wish to join Barcelona combined with Atletico’s refusal to sell creates substantial barriers.

Alvarez’s rapport with Atletico supporters has also soured in recent weeks, highlighted by his being booed during a La Liga match against Villarreal. He was reported to have left the pitch without acknowledging the fans, reflecting the current tensions surrounding his future at the club.

Atletico’s manager, Simeone, later clarified that Alvarez had been instructed not to applaud the crowd, adding another layer to the narrative of discontent. As the transfer window draws to a close, the prospect of a sudden shift seems unlikely without an extraordinary turn of events.

In a football landscape often defined by swift decisions, this situation reveals the enduring complexity of transfer negotiations, reminding us how ambition can sometimes be stifled by circumstance.
