English referee Anthony Taylor has retired from refereeing at the age of 47, completing a notable career that saw him officiate 831 games, including 668 in England, being one of the most established referees in the Premier League, reports BritPanorama.
During his time on the field, Taylor officiated 432 top-flight matches, covering every major domestic cup final. He presided over the FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020, as well as the 2015 League Cup final, establishing a reputation for being a reliable presence in high-stakes games.
Reflecting on his career, Taylor acknowledged the pressures of elite officiating, stating, “Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense, and the scrutiny is constant. The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.”
He expressed gratitude toward his assistants, colleagues, and family for their unwavering support, highlighting the sacrifices involved in his career. His tenure on FIFA’s international list lasted 14 years, during which he took charge of significant matches around the world, including two World Cups and two European Championships.
In the 163 international matches he officiated, Taylor was noted for handling major fixtures, including the 2015 Europa League final and both the 2016 Champions League and European Championships finals. Howard Webb, Chief Refereeing Officer at Pro Ref, remarked on Taylor’s contribution, stating, “He has been repeatedly trusted to officiate in the biggest games… He’s consistently demonstrated over a sustained period why he is one of the best and most successful officials that English football has ever produced.”
