Alex Albon crashes into groundhog at Canadian Grand Prix
Formula One driver Alex Albon was involved in a crash during practice at the Canadian Grand Prix when he collided with a groundhog at nearly 100mph. The incident occurred after turn seven on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, resulting in Albon crashing into the barriers and damaging his car beyond repair for sprint qualifying, reports BritPanorama.
The track, located in Parc Jean-Drapeau on Montreal’s Isle Notre-Dame, has had its share of wildlife encounters in previous races. Notably, Lewis Hamilton hit a similar animal during last year’s race and expressed anguish over the incident.
Following the crash, Albon, known as an animal lover, returned to the garage as Williams Racing faced a significant repair job. Onboard footage captured Albon remarking, “I’m so f***ing unlucky,” highlighting his frustration over the incident. Despite the team’s attempts to salvage the situation, Williams confirmed that Albon would not participate in the sprint qualifying due to the extent of the damage.
In the sprint qualifying that followed, George Russell emerged at the top with a time just 0.068 seconds ahead of his teammate Kimi Antonelli, showcasing the competitive nature of the event. This performance was particularly significant for Russell after a challenging race in Miami, where he had struggled for pace.
Russell reflected on his performance, stating, “This feels great after a tough Miami but I never doubted myself.” Meanwhile, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised both Russell and Antonelli for their close contest, suggesting that such competition drives the team’s overall performance.
In a sport where speedy precision often collides with unexpected distractions, Albon’s misfortune serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Formula One racing. As wildlife seems to be an uninvited guest at this circuit, one can only hope for a smoother ride during the main events ahead.
