Green Party candidate emerges in Holborn and St Pancras by-election
Zack Polanski has been selected as the Green Party’s candidate in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election as he prepares to contest this crucial election in a historically Labour stronghold, reports BritPanorama.
The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Sir Keir Starmer, who stepped down as an MP after being ousted by his party, paving the way for Andy Burnham to take over as Prime Minister.
Upon his confirmation as the party’s candidate, Polanski asserted, “everyone knows it’s the Green Party against Labour” in what he labeled a “truly historic” by-election. He aims to challenge the longstanding dominance of Labour in the constituency.
Polanski, following a local party members’ vote, emerged victorious against local councillor Hamza Chowdhury in the selection process after a series of online hustings held on Thursday night.
In his remarks, Chowdhury emphasized the need for an MP who remains engaged beyond the election cycle, stating that the constituency should not have “another MP who arrives during an election campaign” only to “disappear once the votes are counted.”
This election poses a significant initial test for Mr Burnham’s appeal to voters, with the Green Party positioned as a formidable alternative to Labour. Over the years, the residents of Holborn and St Pancras have increasingly shifted their support towards Green and independent candidates.
Labour has held the seat since its establishment in 1983, with only two individuals—former health secretary Frank Dobson and Sir Keir—having represented the area. However, recent local elections in the London Borough of Camden indicated growing support for the Green Party.
The contest also represents a personal challenge for Polanski, who faces Labour’s Sagal Abdi-Wali, the current leader of Camden Council, in the by-election scheduled for October 8.
Despite a surge in Green support during his tenure as party leader, national polling figures for the party have declined since Burnham’s ascension to Prime Minister. Nevertheless, Polanski remained optimistic about the forthcoming election. “It’s clear, everyone knows it’s the Green Party against Labour,” he reiterated, stressing the party’s progress from one to ten councillors within a year.
Polanski has pledged to engage with constituents, stating, “In 27 days, voters in Holborn and St Pancras will go to the polls. Between now and then, I’ll be on the doorsteps, day in, day out, listening to people about the issues that matter to them.”
He dismissed accusations from Chowdhury regarding the fleeting presence of MPs in the community, asserting that he has deep ties to the area and is committed to the electorate: “I think the local party already knows that doesn’t describe me at all. It’s a place that I know very, very well.”
Polanski expressed enthusiasm for his campaign, conveying confidence in the Green Party’s narrative and its potential to resonate with voters in the constituency.
