UK government approves drilling in Jackdaw gas field

The UK Government has approved plans to begin drilling in the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, reports BritPanorama.

This decision concludes months of speculation regarding the project’s future, with owner Adura indicating it could supply approximately 6% of UK North Sea gas production.

The Jackdaw drilling initiative is one of two projects, alongside the Rosebank oil field off Shetland, previously sanctioned by the former Conservative government.

Both received drilling licenses in June 2022 but faced legal challenges that led to the Scottish courts overturning the approvals after pressing from environmental campaigners.

The situation intensified following a UK Supreme Court ruling mandating developers to consider the climate impact of burning fossil fuels in their planning applications.

Public consultations on the proposals occurred earlier this year, concluding in August, which led to the government’s recent endorsement of the Jackdaw project on Wednesday morning.

A separate decision regarding Rosebank, noted as the largest untapped oil field in the North Sea, remains pending, with Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh stating that it will require “a bit longer” for resolution.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham articulated the government’s commitment to renewable energy while endorsing a “pragmatic” approach concerning North Sea resources.

He remarked: “I welcome the energy secretary’s decision, which will protect hundreds of jobs and help keep millions of homes warm this winter. At a time when people are really struggling, it’s right that we look in a responsible way at maximising the existing energy reserves we have in Britain that could help.”

Burnham further highlighted: “We’re committed to moving towards renewable energy and reaching net zero by 2050. But even on our ambitious climate path, we’ll still require oil and gas as part of our energy needs for decades to come.”

Additionally, he discussed establishing a new Energy Wealth Fund aimed at investing in renewable energy, facilitating the green transition, and long-term reduction of energy bills.

“Our approach will ensure we can boost our energy security, back British workers, ringfence future North Sea proceeds to speed up the green transition, hit our ambitious climate targets and – crucially – bring down bills,” he concluded.
