Starmer faces growing pressure as Labour figures raise concerns over possible resignation

Sir Keir Starmer faced renewed pressure yesterday as Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy suggested he might consider resigning instead of contesting a potential leadership challenge, reports BritPanorama.

Nandy stated that the decision for the Prime Minister to remain in office would be a “personal decision” if a leadership contest is triggered. Her remarks are a clear indication that senior Labour figures now recognize the possibility that Starmer may opt to step down rather than engage in a contentious battle for leadership.

Nearly 100 Labour MPs have publicly called for Starmer’s resignation or have demanded a timetable for his exit. The focus is shifting from whether he will face a challenge to whether he wishes to fight to stay in power.

Nandy acknowledged Starmer’s past resilience, stating he had demonstrated he could “fight” but emphasized that the choice to stay was ultimately his own. Her comments come amidst speculation about his political future as rivals appear eager for the leadership role.

She pointed to Starmer’s success in the 2020 Labour leadership election and his performance in the 2024 general election, suggesting that while he should not be underestimated, the decision remains deeply personal.

The former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has reignited tensions within the party by labeling Brexit a “catastrophic mistake,” advocating for Britain to consider rejoining the EU in the future. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is also positioning himself as a contender for parliamentary return, bolstered by the recent agreement of Labour MP Josh Simons to step aside in the Makerfield by-election.

Nandy, an associate of Burnham, commended his focus on cost-of-living issues while critiquing Streeting’s stance on Brexit. Meanwhile, Downing Street maintains that Starmer is committed to fighting any leadership challenge but has noted that no official contest has yet been initiated. A leadership challenge requires backing from 20% of the party, currently amounting to 81 MPs.

The ongoing developments within the Labour Party reflect deeper questions about leadership and direction as the party navigates its future amid increasing discontent among its ranks.

The Labour Party’s predicament highlights the intricate dynamics of leadership within a political party facing both internal fractures and external pressures. As potential successors emerge, the choices made by its current leadership will shape not only the party’s trajectory but also its relationship with the electorate in the coming years.
