Sir Keir Starmer condemns attacks on police amid protests in Southampton
SIR Keir Starmer today blasted “disgraceful” attacks on police after 11 officers were injured during protests over the murder of Henry Nowak, reports BritPanorama.
The Prime Minister warned that anyone “engaging in disorder” would face “the full force of the law” during a speech in the House of Commons.
The violence erupted in Southampton last night, where bricks, bottles, and bins were hurled at riot police. This unrest followed the murder of 18-year-old Henry, who sustained five stab wounds before police apprehended him despite his pleas for assistance.
Starmer addressed the Commons, noting the remarkable dignity shown by Henry Novak’s family in light of their son’s tragic death. He stated, “There are serious questions to answer, including how accusations of racism informed police thinking,” while expressing strong condemnation for the violence that transpired.
He said, “The attacks directed towards police officers in Southampton last night were disgraceful and completely unacceptable. This is a time for serious work, not rage,” and affirmed that all individuals found engaging in disturbances would face legal consequences.
Starmer also criticized Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s remarks regarding the murder as “unforgivable,” accusing him of exploiting the situation at the expense of the grieving family, who had requested not to inflame divisions. Farage had claimed that “growing millions” of Britons feel they are subjected to two-tier policing, warning that anger over the case could escalate further.
During a tense exchange at Prime Minister’s Questions, Farage questioned the Prime Minister’s stance on policing practices, suggesting systemic issues relating to race. He argued, “It is now clear to growing millions in this country that we’re living under two-tier policing.”
Starmer countered, stating, “I don’t believe there’s two-tier policing in this country,” emphasizing that the family’s request should not be politicized for personal gain. He highlighted the need for a focus on justice and accountability in light of the tragic events.
The chaos in Southampton resulted in two arrests and left multiple officers injured. Bodycam footage showing Henry being handcuffed while in distress has contributed to the outcry, prompting police chiefs to review existing policies related to racial guidance.
