Following allegations of breaching political donation rules, two prominent officials from Reform UK, James Orr and Dan Jukes, have resigned and the party has initiated an investigation, reports BritPanorama.
The allegations stem from a report by Channel 4 News alleging that the party accepted funding from a US firm for three commissioned polls, totalling £32,500. These purported donors were later revealed to be undercover reporters posing as an American financier and his UK-based son.
Both Orr, who serves as head of policy, and Jukes, a senior aide to party leader Nigel Farage, are at the centre of this investigation, which has been prompted by concerns over the legality of foreign funding for political parties in the UK. Foreign entities are prohibited from donating to political parties, including payments for research and studies, making the accusations significant in potential legal ramifications.
In response to the fallout, Farage plans to address the situation in his keynote speech at the upcoming party conference in Birmingham. He is expected to unveil bold proposals, including a commitment to make Parliament operate continuously until all legislation is passed, should Reform UK win the next general election.
Education Secretary Lucy Powell stated that the positions of Orr and Jukes had become “untenable” following the allegations and highlighted a troubling pattern of behaviour associated with the party. She claimed that the Labour Party has also referred the matter to the police, citing clear breaches of electoral law.
The ongoing investigation coincides with an overall atmosphere of scrutiny concerning Reform UK’s financing methods. Rival parties have previously alerted authorities about similar allegations of financial misconduct, and there is growing pressure on the party’s leadership to clarify their financial practices.
