Reform UK finds no breach of political donation rules

Reform UK has concluded that it did not violate political donation regulations following an internal investigation into discussions about handling a potential foreign cash payment, reports BritPanorama.

The investigation was prompted by a Channel 4 documentary alleging the discussion of a £500,000 donation, which the report stated “did not take place.” The inquiry determined that Reform UK had not commissioned polls that were paid for by undercover journalists posing as wealthy donors.

In response to the allegations, Reform suspended Dan Jukes, an aide to party leader Nigel Farage, as well as head of policy James Orr. Despite these suspensions, the internal probe found “no evidence” that laws were broken by either individual.

While the report acknowledged that Mr. Jukes had commissioned opinion polling, it also stated Mr. Orr was “wrong” in asserting that unauthorized donations could go unnoticed.

A Reform UK spokesperson reiterated that the investigation encompassed all pertinent evidence, including witness interviews, documents, and electronic communications. “Having concluded the review, the investigation found no evidence that any laws were broken,” the spokesperson said.

Channel 4, the broadcaster behind the initial investigation, defended its journalism, asserting that the report underwent rigorous editorial and legal review before airing. “Given the ongoing police investigation, we will not be commenting further,” said a spokesperson for Channel 4.

A spokesperson for Verbatim, a consultancy, pointed out that the internal report was authored by Reform’s own legal counsel and general secretary, while reiterating confidence in the integrity of their journalism amid ongoing scrutiny.

The outcome of this investigation may influence public perceptions of Reform UK, particularly as it ensues in a politically charged environment where transparency and accountability are paramount.
