One in three British adults (33 per cent) would prefer Count Binface to win the upcoming Clacton by-election, according to a recent poll. Only 21 per cent expressed support for Nigel Farage’s re-election as MP, while a significant 74 per cent indicated that the parliamentary standards commissioner should investigate the leader of Reform UK, reports BritPanorama.
Farage faces mounting scrutiny regarding his financial dealings, amid revelations that the Metropolitan Police has been looking into £500,000 in donations to his political party for over a year. This increased investigation comes as he resigned from his position as the Clacton MP to pave the way for the by-election, in which he will stand as a candidate.
His main contender appears to be the parody candidate Count Binface, as mainstream political parties declined to take part in this contest. Reform UK’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, contended that a donor involved in the controversy surrounding the party’s finances originates from a “very successful aristocratic family,” dismissing the ongoing criticisms as a “politically motivated smear.”
Reports suggest that George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster and key figure in the donation controversy, had his mother, Fiona, make two £250,000 payments to Reform before the 2024 general election. She also contributed £1 million to Britain Means Business, of which Tice is a director.
With the political landscape in Clacton complex, Farage’s return marks a significant moment, echoing back to the constituency’s colourful political past. He previously contested the seat effectively under the UK Independence Party, but time will tell how the electorate will respond this time.
