Police arrest suspect in murder of Ann Widdecombe
Police investigating the murder of Ann Widdecombe say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death as they continue to question a 28-year-old British man, reports BritPanorama.
Devon and Cornwall Police have indicated that the suspect arrested in South Yorkshire is in custody, with no evidence suggesting her killing was politically motivated. Widdecombe, a former Conservative minister, was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor around 11.40am on Thursday after sustaining serious injuries.
Authorities believe Ms Widdecombe was attacked on Wednesday at approximately 12.30pm, shortly after she communicated with a Channel 5 producer regarding a remote appearance on the network’s Matt Allwright show. Following the attack, police arrested the suspect on suspicion of her murder.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman addressed the media after 11.30am on Sunday to provide updates on the investigation. “Our investigation into the death of 78-year-old Ann Widdecombe has continued to develop over the past 24 hours,” he stated.
Longman confirmed that the suspect, identified as a 28-year-old white British man, was arrested around 9pm on Saturday, July 11, at an address in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, with the support of Counter Terrorism Policing North East and South Yorkshire Police.
The family of Ms Widdecombe has been informed of the latest developments and continues to receive support from specialist officers. Police have emphasised that there is currently no indication that this incident relates to terrorism, and they are not actively seeking further suspects. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities remaining open-minded about the motive despite a lack of evidence suggesting political intent.
A cordon remains in place at the scene as police conduct further inquiries, with plans for increased law enforcement presence in the local area in the coming weeks to reassure the community. “We do not have any information suggesting a wider threat to the public,” Longman reassured.
