Nigel Farage regains parliamentary seat after defeating Count Binface in by-election

Nigel Farage wins seat back in Clacton special election

Nigel Farage has reclaimed a seat in Parliament, defeating comic candidate Count Binface in a special election held on Friday, reports BritPanorama.

Farage garnered 22,239 votes, while Binface secured nearly 9,500 votes. The election, conducted on the hottest day of the year thus far, saw a turnout of 44%.

The leader of the anti-immigration Reform UK party, Farage had previously resigned from his post in July, prompting a widely ridiculed special election as part of an investigation concerning a failure to report a £5 million ($6.7 million) gift from a crypto billionaire.

In announcing his candidacy, Farage stated he aimed to affirm his support among voters. Binface, who frequently challenges for seats, emerged as the primary opposition within a field of 34 candidates, following a boycott of the election by major parties, which some viewed as a political maneuver by Farage.

Farage claimed victory early in the morning and opted to forgo the official declaration, avoiding sharing the stage with his fellow candidates, many of whom ran humorous campaigns.

Binface’s platform included eccentric promises such as “cutting your taxes, and raising everyone else’s,” building one affordable home, and nationalising singer Adele.

While Farage’s victory underscores his significant backing in the Clacton area of England, it does not guarantee his future tenure. The investigation by a parliamentary watchdog, which was paused during his resignation, is set to resume and may potentially remove Farage from office, leading to another election.
