Andy Burnham becomes UK prime minister

Andy Burnham is set to become UK prime minister on Monday after Sir Keir Starmer bowed out, reports BritPanorama.

Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor, will be joined by his wife, Marie-France van Heel, as he embarks on this new chapter in his political career. The couple, who have been together since their undergraduate days at Cambridge University, are known for their familial bond, having three children together and a pet bichon frise.

Born in the Netherlands, Ms van Heel met Burnham in 1989 at Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam College. Their relationship, marked by shared interests such as a love for The Smiths, faced a peculiar moment when she appeared on the ITV dating show Blind Date in 1992, which Burnham watched nervously from behind the sofa.

Their early connection took an unconventional turn when Ms van Heel chose not to continue dating her chosen contestant, a decision that ultimately led to them marrying in 2000. She has maintained a professional career largely in marketing, having held significant roles including chief strategy officer at Heavenly and her current position as chief marketing officer at Iduna Infrastructure, which owns a substantial portion of Manchester’s electric vehicle charging network.

Questions regarding possible conflicts of interest arose due to her current role while Burnham served as mayor, prompting him to clarify his distance from any decisions regarding Iduna. They are now regarded as a tight-knit family unit as Burnham takes on the prime ministerial role, with Ms van Heel historically choosing to remain largely out of the public eye.

While she did not join her husband on stage during his acceptance of the Labour leadership, the couple was photographed embracing in a moment of familial support at the TUC headquarters in London. As Burnham prepares for his new role, there is curiosity regarding how visible Ms van Heel may become as the spouse of the prime minister.
