Labour MP advocates for improved sex education amid political scrutiny
A Labour MP has called for enhanced sex education in the UK, suggesting initiations such as bringing sex toys to the Palace of Westminster as part of a campaign aimed at addressing sexual abuse and relationship issues. This proposal comes from South Derbyshire MP Samantha Niblett, who has recently taken on the role of chair for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Sex and Reproductive Health, reports BritPanorama.
Niblett’s remarks, made in the context of her campaign for “a summer of sex,” have garnered attention and support, including from actress Dame Emma Thompson. She argues that discussing sex in a more open and positive manner is crucial for tackling societal issues. “If some of my colleagues, who should be some of the most progressive MPs that there are, are finding it amusing, then I look forward to seeing the goodness that will come off the back of the campaign,” she told the BBC.
She has expressed no regret about the media spotlight on her views, relishing the recognition that comes with her advocacy. Niblett stated, “As it picks up support across the country, you’ll probably find more of my colleagues feeling comfortable to put their head above the parapet and talk about it.” She also emphasized the importance of reclaiming the narrative around sex toys, encouraging a shift “away from shame and stigma” in public discourse.
“A significant part of sex between people is communication and it is pleasure,” she added. “One of the ways we can get pleasure is through the use of sex toys.” Niblett argues that breaking down barriers surrounding these conversations is essential to addressing the numerous issues related to sexual health and relationships.
Niblett highlighted the troubling statistics surrounding sexual assault, revealing that approximately 15.9 per cent of individuals aged 16 or older reported experiencing sexual assault since turning 16, according to the Crime Survey for England and Wales. This figure includes nearly 1.9 million rape victims, a vast majority of whom are female, as indicated by data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The campaign for improved sex education is gaining momentum, propelled by long-standing concerns about the lack of adequate curricula in schools. The Local Government Association (LGA) warned in 2017 about the repercussions of insufficient sex and relationship education, describing it as a “ticking sexual health time bomb.” Niblett’s push has met with critical remarks from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who accused the Labour party of “fiddling while Rome burns” during discussions in the Commons.
In response, Niblett has urged a collaborative approach to the issue, stating, “I would be doing this no matter what party I was sitting in, and I really hope the campaign itself is not diminished because people want to use it as a weapon to make it party political.” She underscored the need for government-led improvements to sex education.
Support for these reforms is growing, with Labour MP Alistair Strathern introducing the Relationships and Sex Education (Further Education Sector) Bill in June, aimed at making sex education mandatory for students aged 16 to 18. This initiative follows a petition by the survivor-led campaign group Make It Mandatory, which gathered over 106,000 signatures advocating for compulsory sex education until the age of 18.
Niblett’s campaign reflects a broader societal call for change, indicating an urgent need to address the gaps in sex education and support, while navigating the complexities of political discourse surrounding the topic.
