Former MP Ann Widdecombe's driver expresses shock over suspected murder, recalls her vibrant spirit

Emotional tributes follow death of Ann Widdecombe

Following the shocking revelation that Ann Widdecombe may have been murdered, her personal driver, Peter Horrell, has paid tribute to the former Tory prisons minister, describing her as a “great lady” who was “very comical” and “down to earth”, reports BritPanorama.

Mr Horrell expressed his “absolute shock” upon learning about the nature of her death. He commented that Miss Widdecombe had never indicated any fear for her safety and enjoyed her life in Haytor, Devon, where she lived independently.

Speaking to journalists after placing flowers outside her home, he recounted his first reaction upon hearing of her passing. “When I saw it yesterday, I thought she had had a heart attack or a stroke or something,” he noted. The subsequent news about a suspected murder has left him reeling from disbelief.

Describing his interactions with her, Mr Horrell recalled how they last worked together during a trip to Yeovil in Somerset, highlighting her kindness in ensuring he was well taken care of during their time together. “She always looked after me and made sure I had something to eat,” he remarked.

When asked if she had ever expressed concerns for her safety, he replied, “Not really, she seemed quite happy living up here by herself. You never expect it, do you? Well I certainly didn’t. You know, very sad.”

Mr Horrell further elaborated on Miss Widdecombe’s fondness for her surroundings, stating, “She loved walking up on the moors and, as you know, she got a swimming pool at the back. So if she came back late or late-ish she’d always have the brandy and go for a swim.”

He concluded with heartfelt praise, saying, “She was a great lady, very kind. You know, it was absolutely a privilege to take her in the car, and she was funny at times.”

As reflections on her life and contributions to politics emerge, Mr Horrell’s insights underscore the sense of loss felt within the community. The former MP’s outspoken nature and unwavering positions are noted as qualities that will be difficult to replace.

In this profound moment of grief, the impact she had on those around her is clear, leaving a mark that will be remembered. The ongoing investigation into her death continues to raise questions about safety and community in the region, highlighting the complexities of public life in times of upheaval.
