FlyDubai co-pilot launched axe attack on captain in suspected terror incident, UAE reports

Flydubai co-pilot attempted terrorist attack during flight

An Omani co-pilot on FlyDubai flight FZ1073 attacked the captain with an axe in an apparent attempt to carry out a terrorist act, the United Arab Emirates prosecutor general disclosed on Saturday, reports BritPanorama.

The incident occurred during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, prompting a swift response from passengers and crew who managed to subdue the assailant. According to reports, the co-pilot intended to take control of the aircraft following the attack, which resulted in the captain sustaining injuries.

UAE authorities state that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the motives behind the incident and to gather relevant evidence, both physical and digital. The prosecutor general specified that assessments of the co-pilot’s background and connections are a priority in the investigation.

Hamam al-Hammami, the identified co-pilot, previously completed a distance-learning course in aviation management at a UK university but did not receive pilot training there. A spokesperson for Buckinghamshire New University conveyed that their thoughts are with those affected by the incident, particularly the injured pilot, crew, and passengers.

Al-Hammami has faced scrutiny due to concerns over radical ideological views, leading to his ban from flying last year. Reports indicate the Omani national was previously removed from a position at Oman’s national airline for similar reasons.

The airline confirmed that the investigation is still active as they gather more information about the event and how such a security breach could occur, especially in light of the rigorous background checks that are supposed to be in place for pilots. This incident raises serious questions about the vetting processes in aviation, particularly for those recruited from abroad.

As authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, the aviation community watches closely, aware that procedural vulnerabilities could have far-reaching consequences in future incidents.
