An emergency alert is being sent to phones across England and Wales as ministers scramble to tackle the growing threat of dangerous wildfires, reports BritPanorama.
The alert, dispatched from around 7pm to millions, advises individuals not to ignite anything that could cause a fire, including barbecues, campfires, and fireworks. People are also urged to report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999.
This warning, issued at the request of Fire and Rescue Services according to Andy Burnham, comes as firefighters continue to combat extensive blazes across various regions. In Stourbridge, for example, 19 homes were completely destroyed as several major fires broke out.
In response to the escalating situation, the Prime Minister has called in the military and announced a ban on disposable barbecues, cautioning smokers against igniting “tinderbox” Britain amid the ongoing summer heatwave. The government also plans to commission firefighting planes, similar to those deployed in Europe and the U.S., to help manage the growing wave of fires.
First Secretary of State Louise Haigh noted that this alert marks the most extensive use of the UK’s emergency alert system to date. She emphasized that the government’s actions reflect the seriousness of the wildfire threat and its commitment to safeguarding people and properties.
