Defence Secretary urges Britons to prepare for disasters
Britons should ensure they have a stockpile of cash, bottled water, and tinned food at home in case of disaster or war, according to Defence Secretary Wes Streeting. He highlighted that the UK faces increased risks from natural disasters such as fires and floods, as well as threats from enemy states and cyber warfare, reports BritPanorama.
Streeting emphasized the necessity of a “whole society approach” to enhance national resilience while urging the public to remain “alert not alarmed” regarding potential threats. Speaking on the eve of the Labour Party conference, he remarked, “It’s not a big ask, it’s just a simple ask of people.”
He encouraged individuals to consider their preparedness for situations where they might lose access to online banking or experience power cuts. “If there was a risk of wildfire, if there was a risk of flooding, sometimes it feels like even in communities that experience those sorts of events periodically, we’re not as prepared as we should be,” he noted.
Streeting outlined basic supplies that should be kept at home, including cash for emergencies, a supply of bottled water, and tinned goods. He pointed out that these are simple measures and that many families likely maintain such supplies already.
Addressing broader security concerns, he pointed out the dual threats posed by foreign adversaries and environmental challenges. He mentioned that “individual citizens” should think about preparedness for both natural disasters and potential acts of terrorism or war. “That can only be a good thing for national resilience,” he asserted.
In response to concerns about public reaction, Streeting stressed the importance of maintaining a balance in messaging. “I want people to be alert, not alarmed,” he shared, acknowledging the potential for overreaction. “Resilience is always important for a country.”
The government has released a list of essential emergency supplies that all households should consider having on hand, which includes a first aid kit, batteries, a flashlight, and a wind-up radio.
