Professor Jason Arday resigns amid plagiarism investigation
An academic embroiled in a high-profile plagiarism controversy has resigned from his position as a sociology professor at the University of Cambridge following the initiation of an investigation. The inquiry into Professor Jason Arday, who became the youngest black professor at the university in 2023, began “following new information,” reports BritPanorama.
The university stated that the investigation will assess Professor Arday’s academic qualifications and honorary appointments. Media reports have alleged that he plagiarised his PhD thesis and other research, while also scrutinising claims related to his personal achievements, including a purported 600-mile run in six days and raising £5.5 million for charity.
In a letter to colleagues published on the Good Law Project’s website, Professor Arday expressed that the scrutiny he faced extended “far beyond scholarly disagreement.” He described the “relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary” as having a profound impact on both himself and his family. He stated that resigning was the only way to conclude this chapter of his life, asserting that it should not be seen as a loss of faith in scholarship or the values that guided him to Cambridge.
Professor Arday shared his background, noting that his achievement as the youngest Black professor was something he could hardly have imagined during his childhood, which involved challenges including autism and delayed speech. “The response from so many people across the world was overwhelming,” he remarked, highlighting that his appointment symbolised resilience amid adversity.
He emphasized his need for “time to heal” and denied the allegations in an interview with The Times, stating, “We’re talking about academia here. I didn’t murder somebody. I think the cruelty that I’ve experienced and the positioning of me as this kind of liar and fantasist is totally unacceptable.”
A statement from the University of Cambridge confirmed the ongoing investigation related to Professor Arday’s qualifications, clarifying that further comments would be withheld until its completion. The university also acknowledged ongoing complaints regarding academic misconduct, which are being addressed in accordance with its research misconduct policy.
The university reiterated its support for Professor Arday and indicated that Jesus College, Cambridge, would be pursuing its own procedures in relation to his fellowship status. A spokesperson for the college noted, “Professor Arday’s college fellowship is linked to his university role and we will fully support the university,” while acknowledging the challenging circumstances for him and his family.
As the investigation unfolds, the broader implications for academic integrity and support within institutional frameworks remain under scrutiny.
