Andy Burnham discusses potential for UK to rejoin EU

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated he hopes to see Britain rejoin the European Union during his lifetime, reopening the Brexit discussion that has been contentious since the 2016 referendum, reports BritPanorama.

Burnham expressed skepticism over the outcomes of Brexit, claiming it has not unfolded as anticipated, particularly concerning immigration policies. He reiterated his position of not rejoining the EU within this Parliament, emphasizing that any potential changes would first require public support.

Recent comments from Burnham indicate he might consider including a return to freedom of movement in Labour’s election manifesto, though he remains committed to adhering to party leader Sir Keir Starmer’s established red lines against rejoining the single market or customs union during this Parliament.

Amid speculation about an early general election, Burnham confirmed he would not call one “any time soon.” He stated that his focus remains on listening to constituents, acknowledging past failures in immigration control, particularly related to the small boats crisis.

During an interview with ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Burnham remarked on the inadequacies of current immigration controls, stating, “The reason the small boats crisis has arisen is because we can’t return people.” He expressed a desire for an improved deal, advocating for a collective discussion on how to achieve this while ensuring public support.

Burnham articulated his personal wish for the UK to rejoin the EU, noting, “In my lifetime I would like to see that happen,” but reiterated that any move must align with public opinion. He pointed out that the post-Brexit landscape has demonstrated a tougher reality than initially promised and has negatively impacted the economy.

His assertions reflect a growing dialogue on the UK’s relationship with the EU, even as the Labour Party maintains its current policy framework. Notably, this discussion marks the first time Burnham has addressed the possibility of rejoining the EU officially as Prime Minister, signalling a potential shift in the national conversation about Brexit.

The evolving political dynamics underline the complexities faced by the government as it navigates post-Brexit realities and public sentiment towards the EU.
