Andy Burnham confirmed as Labour’s candidate for Makerfield by-election

Andy Burnham has been confirmed as Labour’s candidate in the Makerfield by-election, reports BritPanorama.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester was the sole nominee selected by Labour’s National Executive Committee, circumventing a local party vote, as is customary in such instances.

This by-election follows the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons, paving the way for Burnham to seek a return to Westminster. Should he succeed, it could set the stage for a leadership challenge to current Labour leader Keir Starmer.

However, a victory is not guaranteed; Labour secured a narrow majority of 5,399 votes in the previous election, heightening the stakes for this upcoming contest.

In response, Reform UK has announced Robert Kenyon, a local plumber who previously ran for the party in 2024, as their candidate for the by-election.

Burnham has positioned himself as the candidate capable of “changing Labour,” launching his campaign with a video advocating for a “new path for Britain.” Recent local elections revealed significant momentum for Reform UK, as they dominated the Makerfield constituency by winning every council ward.

Reform garnered around half of the total votes in that election, while Labour trailed with just over a quarter, indicating a challenging landscape for Burnham.

Kenyon previously served in the army reserves and worked as a specialist technician for the NHS in Lancashire. He finished second in the 2024 election, suggesting he has some local recognition and support.

Nigel Farage characterized the by-election as a “David versus Goliath” contest, stating, “This is the plucky plumber taking on open borders Burnham. Only Reform UK can beat Labour in this by-election.”

The evolving dynamics of this by-election reflect broader themes within UK politics, particularly the challenge that traditional parties face from emerging alternatives amid shifting electoral loyalties.
