UK approves US military use of bases for strikes on Iran
Andy Burnham has permitted the United States to utilise British military bases for “defensive strikes” against Iran, reports BritPanorama.
The new Prime Minister continues the contentious policy initiated by Keir Starmer, as Donald Trump asserted he is “not finished yet” in his military engagement. Bases such as RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia will remain operational for American forces conducting operations targeting the Islamic Republic.
This decision marks Burnham’s first significant move as Labour leader and could potentially place him at odds with Trump had he refused access to US military aircraft. According to sources, the continuation of the policy follows a COBR meeting chaired by Starmer before his departure from 10 Downing Street amidst a week of intensive US bombardments in Iran.
Ministers at this meeting deemed it essential to maintain access for US operations aimed at countering the Iranian missile threat and securing the Strait of Hormuz. Despite concerns from various Labour MPs, as well as opposition from the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats regarding potential complicity in conflict, Burnham seems to have aligned with his party’s established position.
The US response to the UK’s decision revealed some dissatisfaction, with a US official citing Trump’s disappointment over NATO allies’ limited support during Operation Epic Fury, which aims to denuclearise Iran. The official indicated that the US has maintained a significant military presence in Europe, yet their requests for access to NATO bases for operations have been declined.
Trump has asserted that the US must have the capability to use European bases to enhance both global and European security. Following a recent conversation between Trump and Burnham regarding bilateral relations, topics discussed included North Sea oil, trade, military alliances, and the demining of the Hormuz Strait.
