Andy Burnham accepts £17,000 in free gifts as Manchester mayor

Andy Burnham has accepted free tickets, gifts, and payments for speeches worth a total of £17,059 while serving as the mayor of Manchester, raising questions about his image as a representative of the people, reports BritPanorama.

Burnham received these freebies over 17 occasions from June 2024 to March 2026, averaging around £853 per month. The findings were revealed as part of an investigation, highlighting an apparent discrepancy between his public persona and private actions.

The freebies included significant football-related perks, such as a £5,000 trip to the 2024 Euro finals. This revelation complicates the narrative of Burnham, often portrayed as a champion of the people, especially after receiving the label “Airmiles Andy II” following reports of his nine overseas trips in two years, which featured visits to the United States, Ireland, Japan, and Singapore.

Burnham, who earns £118,267 annually as the leader of Greater Manchester, was upgraded to upper class on one of his transatlantic flights, more than any other metropolitan mayor has experienced. His register of gifts and hospitality indicates access to exclusive events, including four tickets to Glastonbury, valued at £1,520, and additional accommodation expenses.

Recent instances include being entertained by Sony Music Entertainment at the Brit Awards in February, enjoying over £3,800 worth of luxury food and drink for himself and his wife, Frankie. He has accepted free tickets for music gigs and last September, attended a football match between Everton and Liverpool, accruing £228 in benefits.

Burnham’s public engagements have also included compensated speaking events, such as a £1,000 fee for a lecture in Manchester hosted by Theos, which he donated to his charity.

The implications of these revelations continue to develop amidst an evolving political landscape.

As scrutiny on public figures increases, the intersection of personal benefit and public service will remain a pivotal issue, particularly for those aspiring to national leadership roles.
