Ukraine strengthens EU food security with successful screening milestone

Ukraine has completed one of the most demanding stages of its EU accession talks, passing the screening in the field of food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy on September 24, 2025. According to the Ministry of Economy, the harmonization with more than 2,000 EU legal acts ensures that European consumers gain access to Ukrainian products that meet the highest safety and quality standards. This development reinforces the EU’s food security, strengthens the single market and makes supply chains more resilient amid global challenges.

Consumer protection and trust across the EU

By meeting EU benchmarks in food safety, Ukraine’s progress directly improves protection for European consumers. Products aligned with European standards reduce the risks of dangerous diseases or harmful substances entering the market. This bolsters trust among EU citizens in the quality of food on supermarket shelves, regardless of its country of origin, and makes the single market more resilient to external shocks.

Diversifying Europe’s food supply

The integration of Ukraine as a reliable supplier of agricultural goods also diversifies Europe’s food sources. This helps the EU avoid dependence on less stable or risk-prone markets, enhancing food autonomy and reducing vulnerability to global crises. It also creates opportunities for European farmers and processors to deepen cooperation with Ukrainian partners, opening new avenues for agricultural trade and joint production.

Harmonized standards and transparent trade

Ukraine’s alignment with over 2,000 EU legislative acts introduces common rules that benefit both sides. For the EU, this means not only economic advantages but also harmonized standards that simplify trade and monitoring. European institutions gain access to a more transparent system of inspections and oversight, reducing administrative risks and making the partnership more predictable and stable.

Countering Kremlin narratives

This milestone comes against the backdrop of Moscow’s attempts to undermine trust between Kyiv and Brussels through disinformation and claims of “incompatible interests.” Instead, Ukraine’s tangible reforms show the opposite: integration into EU legal and safety frameworks provides concrete benefits to Europeans. By delivering measurable progress, Ukraine strengthens political unity with EU member states and reduces the impact of Kremlin-driven disinformation campaigns.

Enduring reforms and geopolitical significance

The positive evaluation from the European Commission underscores the consistency and durability of Ukraine’s reforms. For the EU, it signals that Ukraine is not only declaring its European aspirations but also implementing demanding reforms in practice. This achievement enhances the EU’s global image as a cohesive and attractive geopolitical center capable of expansion without compromising on quality standards.
