Metallica sets new record for largest concert in Welsh history at Cardiff show

Metallica makes history with record-breaking Cardiff concert

Metallica’s recent performance at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium marked the band’s first appearance in Wales in 30 years, drawing a crowd that set a new record for the largest concert ever held in the country, reports BritPanorama.

The concert, which took place on 28 June, saw a significant turnout, with many attendees donning Metallica merchandise. Drummer Lars Ulrich was reportedly among the audience, excited to witness the opening night of Oasis’s 2025 tour as well. Metallica’s staging, which featured an in-the-round setup, outdid Oasis in terms of attendance, further underlining the band’s enduring appeal.

Prior to this event, Cardiff had not hosted Metallica since 1996, during which time the band has performed at various iconic venues including the notorious Woodstock 1999 festival and a unique concert in Antarctica in 2013. Local establishments, such as the rock bar Fuel, experienced a surge in visitors, reflective of the excitement surrounding the event.

Fans in attendance appeared to welcome the band’s lengthy hiatus with enthusiasm rather than resentment. Metallica’s performance was characterized by their energetic staging and audience interaction. Singer James Hetfield expressed his delight at performing, stating he has the “best job in the world.” The band also entertained the crowd with a playful rendition of Tom Jones’ “Delilah,” showcasing their ability to connect with Welsh fans.

The setlist leaned towards post-1990 tracks, highlighting songs that have helped the band fill stadiums worldwide. Although only the title track from their latest album 72 Seasons was played, classics such as “Sad But True” and the rock anthem “Nothing Else Matters” resonated well within the stadium atmosphere, amplified by impressive pyrotechnics during performances of “Enter Sandman” and “One.”

Metallica’s ability to connect with and energize vast audiences is evident in their choice of songs, with tracks like “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Seek & Destroy” retaining their appeal even in such monumental settings. The concert projected a blend of seasoned professionalism and youthful vigor, reinforcing Metallica’s status as one of the preeminent acts in heavy metal history.

Metallica will play two no-repeat shows at London Stadium on 3 and 5 July
