Chiwetel Ejiofor discusses new film Backrooms and enduring appeal of Love Actually

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in Backrooms directed by Kane “Pixels” Parsons

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in Backrooms, a film directed by Kane “Pixels” Parsons, a 20-year-old YouTuber making his debut in feature filmmaking. The film, which draws on a series of short horror films created by Parsons, explores unsettling themes and parallel worlds, reports BritPanorama.

Backrooms is described as a traditional horror film, centered around liminal spaces where people go missing. Ejiofor plays Clark, a middle-aged man in 1980s America whose mundane life is disrupted when he falls into one of these eerie realms, marked by its distorted reality and lurking dangers. The character’s descent into chaos raises questions about the nature of fear and reality.

The film’s premise is rooted in internet culture, specifically the concept of “creepypasta,” a modern form of horror storytelling that emerged on platforms like 4chan. As Parsons transitioned from YouTube sensation to filmmaker, his early success has paved the way for a project that boasts a $10 million budget and a major star. Ejiofor admits he was previously unaware of the online phenomenon but became captivated after engaging with Parsons.

Ejiofor’s performance as Clark has drawn comparisons to the works of director David Lynch, as the film unfolds in increasingly surreal narratives that leave viewers questioning their interpretation. Ejiofor acknowledges the film’s complexity, stating it invites multiple perspectives concerning memory, thought processes, and human behaviour.

Born in London in 1977 to Nigerian immigrants, Ejiofor rose to prominence thanks to his standout performances across various genres. His career includes notable collaborations with acclaimed directors such as Steven Spielberg and Steve McQueen, earning numerous accolades, including an Oscar nomination. Despite achieving fame, he remains private about his life outside the screen, focusing on the essence of storytelling rather than the accolades of celebrity.

In the wake of his Oscar nomination in 2013, Ejiofor has had to navigate the complexities of celebrity while maintaining a clear focus on his artistic pursuits. He emphasizes the importance of the work itself over the distractions of fame and continues to seek new creative opportunities.

Backrooms is set for release in cinemas this coming Friday.
