Britain urged to prepare for potential war in 1,000 days

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has announced that Britain must be prepared for war within 1,000 days, as the government advises citizens to stock up on essential supplies such as tinned food and bottled water, reports BritPanorama.

In an article published in The Telegraph, Mr. Streeting highlights that Britain’s adversaries may be ready to launch attacks by 2030. He states, “Our adversaries’ willingness to harm us is not new. What has changed is their capacity. By 2030 their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack.”

He added, “That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win.” His statement comes as concerns about Russian aggression continue to rise, prompting him to urge preparations to prevent potential threats.

The government is currently spearheading a campaign encouraging Britons to be ready for possible breakdowns in essential services. Citizens are advised to stock nine litres of bottled water and three days’ worth of food to survive various emergencies, including weather disturbances and cyber attacks.

Mr. Streeting warns of the potential for “state-sponsored terrorism” from Russia, emphasizing the need for both national resilience and defence strategies. He explained, “In the face of those threats, which are not hypothetical but real, and not somewhere else but increasingly here, we have to step up and take seriously our national resilience as well as our national defence.”

Further recommendations include keeping supplies of blankets, cash, a first-aid kit, a torch with batteries, and a wind-up FM radio. Prime Minister Andy Burnham echoed these sentiments, advising citizens to remain calm and take pragmatic steps to ensure proper preparedness.

Earlier this month, MI5 Director General Sir Ken McCallum also called for a “whole-of-society effort” to tackle threats to national infrastructure, warning of the potential consequences of cyber attacks that could disrupt essential services like banking and healthcare. He noted, “Our planning assumption is not that this is a temporary blip and we will all be back to normal by next Christmas.”

In his assessment, Sir Ken emphasized the need for long-term strategies in a world where geopolitical stability has significantly declined post-Cold War, indicating that these risks are likely to persist.
