Government faces backlash after approving drilling in Jackdaw gas field

The government is facing intense backlash after ministers approved plans to begin drilling in the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea following months of speculation over the decision, reports BritPanorama.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh granted approval for the project on Wednesday, asserting it would “support the country’s energy security with homegrown gas this winter.”

The move received immediate criticism, with Green Party leader Zack Polanski describing the decision as “climate vandalism.” He asserted, “Today’s decision by Labour is a betrayal of all of our futures. Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change.”

Climate campaigners echoed these concerns. Kate Norgrove, Chief Impact Officer at WWF, labelled the approval a “disappointing decision,” urging the government to demonstrate its commitment to a clean energy transition by rejecting the “even more damaging” Rosebank oil field.

While the approval of Jackdaw is framed as a boost for energy security, critics argue it may not significantly alleviate current challenges. Tessa Khan, Executive Director of campaign group Uplift, warned that Labour’s climate credibility is “on the line now,” referencing Rosebank as a crucial test of the government’s commitment to climate guidelines.

The Jackdaw project, which promises a substantial level of investment—£2.1 billion—and enough gas to heat approximately 1.4 million UK homes at peak production, is operated by Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Equinor.

Scottish Tory leader Russell Findlay demanded prompt action from Labour, stating, “Andy Burnham must now stop dithering and give Rosebank the green light without any further delay.”

Both the Jackdaw and Rosebank projects were approved by the previous Conservative government in 2022 but faced legal challenges from environmental activists that led to their subsequent overturning in Scottish courts.

As the debate surrounding these drilling projects continues, the implications for climate policy and energy security in the UK remain a focal point of contention.
