Fatalities reported in Alberta military base incident
EDMONTON, Alberta — Canada’s defense minister said Saturday that people were killed and injured in an incident at a military base in Alberta that caused a major fire, reports BritPanorama.
“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” Defense Minister David McGuinty stated.
McGuinty did not provide casualty figures or details about the cause of the incident. He mentioned that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were involved in the investigation and described the situation as “very, very active and delicate.”
The Canadian Armed Forces, along with federal, provincial, and local authorities, are coordinating the emergency response, according to McGuinty. The nearby community of Wainwright is providing hospital and firefighting support.
The Municipal District of Wainwright reported that the fire had crossed the base’s fence earlier Saturday and was spreading rapidly due to high winds. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions are responding, and no evacuation order is currently in effect.
“Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected,” Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed earlier in a social media post.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as “significant and tragic” and stated it is affecting many military personnel.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located approximately 112 miles southeast of Edmonton, is among Canada’s busiest military training facilities, where soldiers prepare for combat operations. It hosts the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which conducts realistic battlefield exercises, and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which provides essential military training.
McGuinty noted that authorities were still working to determine the cause of the incident and are expected to release further information soon.
Carney confirmed that the federal government is closely working with Alberta officials and local authorities, maintaining regular contact with Smith and her ministers.
Smith expressed gratitude to first responders and those providing care and support to those affected.
Canadian Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre stated he had communicated with Carney and the defense minister to offer support to those impacted by the fire. “Pray for Wainwright, everyone,” Poilievre urged in a social media post, encouraging residents to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.
Neither Carney nor Smith provided details regarding the cause of the fire.
The fire occurred just days before the province is set to vote on beginning a process that could lead to its seeking independence from Canada.
