New fines introduced for anti-social behaviour on buses

A new government initiative will see individuals fined £100 for anti-social behaviour such as vaping and littering on public transport, reports BritPanorama.

Ministers are expected to unveil a broad crackdown on these behaviours, responding to escalating public concern over a perceived decline in civility on Britain’s transport systems.

Councils will gain enhanced powers to impose fines on those vaping, dropping rubbish, or displaying threatening behaviour while on buses. A government source highlighted the issue, noting, “The government knows anti-social behaviour is a nightmare for people who experience it.”

A staggering 41 per cent of adults in the UK reported encountering or witnessing anti-social behaviour in the past year, as per the latest Crime Survey for England and Wales, marking a noticeable increase from 35 per cent the previous year.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has committed to tackling the influence of vape shops on local high streets, which many see as contributing to the changing character of communities. He has announced plans for local residents to influence what shops open in their areas, an effort aimed at revitalising struggling town centres.

This latest campaign is part of a broader set of measures designed to alleviate the impact of the ongoing cost of living crisis on British citizens by creating a more hospitable public space and fostering community engagement.
