Zelensky urges Trump to ensure Russia respects ceasefire after latest energy strike

Zelensky asks Trump to press Russia to honour ceasefire

Volodymyr Zelensky has called on US President Donald Trump to exert pressure on Russia to honour the energy ceasefire following allegations that Moscow’s overnight assault specifically targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure, reports BritPanorama.

“Americans must make sure Russians respect the energy ceasefire,” he stated, emphasizing the need for American intervention. “Russia committed violations of the energy ceasefire announced by President Trump… We need American pressure on Russia, not sanctions relief so we can achieve an energy ceasefire,” Zelensky added.

These remarks follow continuing Russian attacks that occurred even after Trump’s announcement of a limited ceasefire regarding energy targets. The Kremlin has yet to issue a definitive response to this assertion.

Reports of power outages emerged across various regions in Ukraine due to persistent strikes on energy facilities, including a significant power plant. Despite the ongoing strikes, Zelensky indicated that Ukraine would honour the ceasefire if Russia complied as well. “We agree if they agree,” he noted, adding that Ukrainian forces had refrained from targeting Russian oil refineries the previous night.

In a further development, the Financial Times has indicated that the US is threatening to suspend its Purl procurement system, which supplies arms to Ukraine, as a means of pressuring Kyiv to halt deep strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.

Amidst these tensions, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk advocated for heightened sanctions against Russia, arguing that the country does not seek a ceasefire or peace. Tusk’s comments were made during his address at the Warsaw Security Forum, highlighting the urgent need for a unified response from Western nations toward Russia’s actions.

Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed skepticism over the reliability of Russia’s commitment to a ceasefire, suggesting that real peace must encompass the protection of lives, not just energy infrastructures. Kallas reiterated that ongoing attacks contradict any claims of adherence to a ceasefire and underscored the need for accountability.

The evolving situation underscores the complexities of international relations and the ongoing struggle for Ukraine as it navigates the challenging landscape of warfare and diplomacy. The seriousness of the situation demands continued attention and action from global powers. The reality remains precarious, as each party’s next move could shift the dynamic considerably.
