Andy Burnham to disclose all dealings with Manchester City from his mayoral tenure

Andy Burnham commits to transparency regarding Manchester City dealings

Andy Burnham has pledged to publish all of his dealings with Manchester City during his time as Manchester mayor after expressing that he would be “really concerned” if the club’s owners had to sell up, reports BritPanorama.

This announcement follows clarifications from Downing Street about Mr. Burnham’s position, which led to increased calls from various politicians for him to disclose all meetings with City representatives. There is a growing demand for transparency in light of recent developments regarding the club’s financial status.

In response to inquiries, Minister for Trade Kemi Badenoch noted that “everything” related to Freedom of Information requests should be released, highlighting potential concerns about undisclosed dealings. She articulated a belief that Burnham’s comments indicated he still viewed himself as the mayor of Manchester rather than a national leader.

Reform UK’s chairman, Lee Anderson, echoed these sentiments, stating that the Prime Minister must detail meetings held with the club’s owners to ensure openness and accountability. He stressed the importance of transparency in governance, particularly concerning significant public interests.

Burnham’s commitment comes amid scrutiny following Manchester City’s recent finding of guilt by an independent commission for breaching financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. The verdict revealed that the club engaged in a “disguised funding scheme” to bypass regulations. City has lodged an appeal against this ruling, claiming the decision contains errors in law and fact.

While Burnham noted that he would make public all actions taken in his previous role with the club’s owners, he distinguished between football-related issues and investment concerns, insisting they must remain separate in discussions going forward. The appeal will be reviewed by a separate board, with a timeline yet to be determined.

In a landscape where football governance and management are increasingly under the microscope, transparency becomes not just desirable but necessary. This matter remains emblematic of a broader search for integrity within football, reminding us how the beautiful game must reckon with its complexities amid ongoing challenges.
