Kemi Badenoch distances herself from Tory claim of a British missile defence system

Kemi Badenoch denies plans for British Iron Dome amid criticism

Kemi Badenoch has rejected the idea that her proposed new missile defences would be a British “Iron Dome,” despite her party’s own press release describing it as a UK version of Israel’s system, reports BritPanorama.

The Conservative leader also insisted that a commitment to spend £10 billion over ten years would be sufficient to construct the defence network, even as military experts expressed doubts regarding its feasibility.

Unveiled at the party’s annual conference in Birmingham, the announcement of the new ‘Britannia Shield’ explicitly referred to it as “in essence, a British Iron Dome.”

However, Mrs Badenoch clarified during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We are not building the Iron Dome. We are doing what other European countries are doing: Greece, the Benelux countries, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and Germany. We are designing something specific for the kind of threat that we face here.”

When asked why the media had referred to it as an Iron Dome, she stated: “You’ll have to speak to the newspapers about that. I called it the Britannia Shield. But we are explaining to people that missile defence systems are things that we need right now. The Iron Dome is one type, and we want people to understand what we’re talking about; we haven’t said that we are replicating that.”

She contended that the allocated £1 billion a year over ten years should be adequate to deliver the project, which would aim to safeguard the entirety of the UK, its overseas territories, and British bases abroad.

Furthermore, when pressed by Times Radio about whether the plans were merely a gimmick, Mrs Badenoch responded, “No, not at all. Shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge has been speaking to senior military figures. He’s a former defence procurement minister. He knows what he’s talking about; they know what they are talking about.”

In contrast, Mr Cartlidge likened the term “Iron Dome” to the brand name “Hoover,” suggesting that it has become synonymous with missile defence systems. He remarked, “So, the phrase ‘Iron Dome’ has come to be used a bit like the word ‘Hoover’ to generically refer to missile defence systems – and this is clearly a missile defence system.”

Air Marshal Greg Bagwell, former deputy commander of RAF Air Command, cautioned that the proposed £10 billion over ten years would likely be inadequate for comprehensive protection of the UK, saying, “You might be able to protect certain key sites, certain strategic areas. London would be an example, but of course that’s not enough.”

He emphasised the challenges of providing extensive coverage across military bases, power stations, and critical infrastructure throughout the country, highlighting that comparable US efforts for their Golden Dome range from $200 billion to $1 trillion (£150 billion to £750 billion).

The Conservatives have accused Labour of neglecting defence issues, with Andy Burnham asserting that national security cannot come “at the expense of social security.” The party claims that measures such as reinstating the two-child benefit cap and reforming housing benefits could help fund these defence plans, alongside their commitment to increase defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP by 2030.
