Pilot celebrated for averting disaster on Israel-bound flight after attacker strikes

Pilot hailed a hero after thwarting mid-air attack

Capt. Smit Machchhar, flying a passenger plane bound for Israel, successfully prevented a catastrophic mid-air disaster after being stabbed by his co-pilot, ultimately allowing the aircraft to land safely in Saudi Arabia. The incident, which involved a Flydubai flight carrying 174 passengers from Dubai to Tel Aviv, unfolded dramatically on Wednesday, as reports indicate that despite sustaining severe injuries, Machchhar opened the cockpit door for passengers and crew to subdue the attacker, reports BritPanorama.

During the flight, Machchhar’s fellow pilot allegedly attempted to divert the plane sharply towards the ground following a violent altercation. Eyewitness accounts detail a chaotic scene, with images circulating that show Machchhar covered in blood as he fought to maintain control. Following the incident, the aircraft was diverted to an airport in Tabuk city, where it landed without further incident.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Machchhar’s actions, stating he “showed the world the highest form of courage” and praised his efforts in averting a potential tragedy comparable to the September 11 attacks. Modi expressed pride in Machchhar’s bravery during a conversation with his family, affirming the global community’s admiration for the captain.

Machchhar has a background in aviation dating back to when he pursued a management course to aid his family’s textile business. He flew for an Indian budget airline for nearly a decade before joining Flydubai in 2022, accumulating around 10,000 hours of flying experience prior to the incident.

Currently receiving treatment for his injuries at a hospital in Tabuk, Machchhar’s condition has been reported as stable, while officials noted he is “very badly wounded.” Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, offered the full support of the Indian government for Machchhar’s recovery and welfare during a visit with his family in Dubai.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled Machchhar “a true hero,” highlighting the extraordinary circumstances under which he successfully averted disaster. “Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker,” Netanyahu stated.

Previously, Machchhar had shared insights into his journey to becoming a pilot, detailing that he trained for 18 months in New Zealand and highlighting the challenges he faced early in his pilot career. His dedication to aviation has been underscored by his extensive experience and the demanding training required for pilots and crew members alike, particularly in emergency protocols to ensure passenger safety.

As news of the incident continues to unfold, the focus remains on Machchhar’s recovery and the implications this harrowing event carries for aviation safety protocols and crew training standards. Concerns over in-flight security have resurfaced, prompting discussions about how to better protect both crew and passengers from similar threats in the future.

In a reflection of the ongoing challenges within aviation security, the incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability and risks faced by those in the industry, as well as the extraordinary resilience and valor demonstrated by individuals like Machchhar in times of crisis.
