Phil Taylor returns to competitive darts alongside Adrian Lewis
Phil Taylor has revealed that the chance to reunite with Adrian Lewis persuaded him to return to competitive darts at 66, reports BritPanorama.
The 16-time world champion will represent England with Lewis at the MODUS Super Series International Pairs tournament in Portsmouth from November 23 to 28. This will be Taylor’s first appearance in the competitive PDC circuit since stepping away eight years ago.
“I’ve been asked plenty of times about coming back, but it would have to be for the right reason,” Taylor stated. “Adrian is one of the very few people I’d come out of retirement to play alongside.” Their reunion marks the revival of the most successful partnership in PDC World Cup of Darts history, where they claimed four titles for England.
The two players previously enjoyed considerable success together, winning the title four times in six appearances. Taylor expressed enthusiasm about their shared history: “We know each other’s games inside out and I’m looking forward to getting back up there with him.” Known as “The Power,” Taylor remains the most decorated player in darts, having won 214 professional tournaments throughout his career.
Taylor’s last competitive match on the PDC circuit occurred in 2018, although he has participated in the World Seniors Darts Championship in recent years. His decision to enter the MODUS event indicates a limited return focused on this tournament rather than a full-time comeback.
Adrian Lewis, the two-time world champion and nicknamed “Jackpot,” also has spent time away from the PDC circuit. He announced a break from professional play in April 2023 but previously represented England at a MODUS International Pairs event alongside Steve Beaton.
“Phil and I have shared some brilliant moments playing together over the years, so to get the chance to do it again is really special,” Lewis remarked. “We know what it takes to win as a pair and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do together.”
As two legends of the sport embark on this brief reunion, the darts community anticipates a nostalgic spectacle that combines past glory with the thrill of rekindled competition.
