Ferrari backs Fred Vasseur amid speculation
Ferrari has convened a media briefing to publicly reaffirm its support for team principal Fred Vasseur, following speculation that Christian Horner could be poised to replace him, reports BritPanorama.
Journalists were notified just 25 minutes in advance of Tuesday morning’s online call, hosted by Ferrari’s chief communications officer Maria Conti. Her remarks were unequivocal, indicating that the team had made a definitive choice regarding its leadership.
“Ferrari has made its choices already,” Conti stated, expressing full confidence in Vasseur and his team. The initiative aims to quash mounting speculation prior to the upcoming race and keep team members focused on vehicle improvements.
A separate session for Italian journalists was also scheduled. This intervention by Ferrari comes in the wake of comments from Horner, which intensified discussions about a potential return to Formula One with the Italian team. In an interview with The Times, Horner remarked that Ferrari represented the only team he would consider joining without an ownership stake, branding it “the biggest brand in Formula One.”
Despite his comments, there has been no formal agreement between Horner and Ferrari. Nevertheless, his remarks come at a critical juncture for Vasseur as the team contends with challenges in maintaining a competitive position on the grid.
Ferrari currently ranks second in the constructors’ standings, yet drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have gone five consecutive races without achieving a podium finish. The team continues to pursue its first championship title since 2008, despite the higher expectations following Hamilton’s arrival.
Vasseur, who took on the team principal role at the beginning of 2023, has openly expressed his frustrations regarding the scrutiny surrounding his position after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, noting that constant inquiries about his future were impacting team morale.
“We are not working in the perfect serenity,” Vasseur stated, acknowledging that these concerns have led to a frustrating atmosphere for both staff in the garage and himself. The purpose of Ferrari’s briefing was to proactively address this issue and prevent Vasseur from facing repetitive questions at each subsequent race.
Conti emphasized the need for the team to remain “united and cohesive,” while ensuring that their focus remains on future challenges. She recognized that Ferrari’s high profile in the sport would naturally draw interest from various figures but insisted that external speculation would not shape their leadership discussions.
