Dr. Heidi Overton faces Senate committee questioning ahead of FDA nomination
Dr. Heidi Overton, President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is set to face rigorous questioning from the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on Thursday, reports BritPanorama.
Overton, who has played a significant but behind-the-scenes role in the Trump administration as deputy assistant for domestic policy, will provide insight into her views on vaccines, access to medication abortion, and proposed reforms for the agency. This hearing marks one of the first occasions for the public to directly hear her stance on these contentious issues.
The FDA has experienced turmoil; the previous commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary, resigned in May under pressure from the White House. Meanwhile, Kyle Diamantas, the acting commissioner with prior experience as deputy commissioner for food, declined the position when approached by Trump, according to insiders.
The Senate committee will also consider Dr. Nicole Saphier’s nomination for surgeon general, as the Trump administration struggled to identify a suitable candidate who garners congressional support. Saphier, a radiologist and former Fox News commentator, is Trump’s third selection for the role.
At 37, Overton could become one of the youngest FDA leaders in history. A graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and a former surgical resident at Johns Hopkins, she is board-certified in public health and general preventive medicine. However, she has been characterized as inexperienced by some critics.
Recently, she revealed her personal battle with type 1 diabetes, which informs her commitment to refining processes for new therapies at the FDA—a challenging task given the agency’s backlog with cell and gene therapies.
In an opinion piece published in Stat, two former FDA commissioners lauded her as “the right pick in a difficult moment,” emphasizing her capability to lead in transforming public health, although concerns about her managerial experience linger.
The FDA oversees a significant regulatory jurisdiction involving approximately 16,000 employees and an annual budget of roughly $7 billion, yet has faced significant staffing cuts—over 4,600 positions eliminated since 2024 due to administrations cuts.
Despite her ties to the White House, Overton’s confirmation is far from assured. HELP Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy expressed worries regarding her limited managerial experience. “While I respect Dr. Overton’s experience as a physician, her lack of managerial experience does not prepare her well for leading a large organization dealing with staffing and morale issues,” he stated via social media.
Additionally, concerns were raised about her endorsement of Trump’s recent executive order on vaccines, which proposes the separation of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine into individual shots, prompting disapproval among health experts and advocacy groups.
Dr. Peter Lurie, a former FDA official, stated Overton’s alignment with this executive order should be “fully disqualifying,” pointing to the agency’s need for experienced leadership amid ongoing challenges in food safety and public health management.
Despite skepticism regarding her qualifications, Overton has garnered support from Trump, who described her as a “ROCKSTAR” in his administration, citing her efforts in advancing a transformative health agenda.
As FDA commissioner, Overton would oversee critical drug policies, including the ongoing litigation regarding mifepristone, a medication involved in abortion procedures. The current administration’s goals, as outlined by Project 2025, aim to restrict access to mifepristone further and potentially revoke its FDA approval.
Overton’s past advocacy for stricter abortion policies and engagement with conservative health initiatives has already sparked dissent among some Senate colleagues. “Heidi Overton is a far-right, anti-abortion extremist who has no business leading the FDA,” remarked Senator Patty Murray, indicating her intent to vote against Overton’s nomination.
Her connection to President Trump’s administration and controversial health-related initiatives has placed her in a challenging position as she navigates her confirmation process.
