Laura Anne Jones named deputy leader of Reform UK in Wales
Laura Anne Jones, a Tory defector suspended less than a year ago for a racial slur, has been appointed the new deputy leader of Reform UK in Wales, reports BritPanorama.
This announcement follows the selection of former deputy Helen Jenner as leader of the party on Monday. Jenner replaces Dan Thomas, who stepped down after being arrested on suspicion of assault and controlling or coercive behaviour.
Thomas, who maintains his innocence, stated that he did not want the case to distract from the party’s objectives. He commented, “I have done nothing wrong,” affirming his commitment to his constituents in Casnewydd Islwyn.
Jones defected to Reform UK from the Welsh Conservatives last summer, expressing her disillusionment with the Conservative Party, which she described as “unrecognisable” from the one she joined over three decades ago.
In a Facebook post, Jones expressed gratitude to her colleagues for their support: “I am honoured to have been elected Deputy Leader of Reform UK Wales. We have made a fantastic start in the Senedd, giving a voice to the voiceless, holding the Welsh Government to account.”
Jones reaffirmed her backing for Jenner, calling her a “strong, effective leader.”
Earlier in November, Jones faced a suspension from the Siambr for 14 days after using a racial slur regarding Chinese individuals in a WhatsApp group during a discussion on the app TikTok. She later stated, “I never meant to cause any offence and would never have that intention of doing so.”
Despite the controversies, she has committed to addressing her language use and has engaged in respect and conduct training. Jenner’s appointment comes as the party seeks to re-establish its position following recent upheavals.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage visited Cardiff to announce Jenner as the new head of the party in Wales, describing recent events as a “bump in the road” and expressing confidence in Jenner’s capabilities as a determined campaigner.
As Reform UK navigates this transition, the dynamics within Welsh politics continue to evolve, reflecting broader issues within the party and its engagement with the electorate.
