North Korea tests new weapon amid rising regional tensions
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea announced the successful testing of a new weapon showcasing “ultra-modern defense technology” on Sunday, in a launch overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, who praised progress in strengthening the country’s war readiness, reports BritPanorama.
Kim asserted that the test, conducted by North Korea’s Missile Administration, marked a significant advancement in the armed forces’ combat abilities, indicating that “the enemy will know better what such progress means without any explanation.”
He further claimed that this development would lead to “an incurable headache and a very cruel and unavoidable blow” for adversaries.
Details regarding the specific type of weapon tested were not disclosed by the KCNA report.
Photographs provided by KCNA depicted Kim, accompanied by his teenage daughter, observing a screen that displayed a map of North Korea’s east coast along with the “flight trajectory” of Hwasongpho-11-ma-1, potentially part of an enhanced series of short-range ballistic missiles.
According to NK News, a Seoul-based website focusing on North Korean affairs, the projectile seemed to represent an upgraded variant of a missile featuring a hypersonic glide vehicle, which can maneuver to evade missile defenses and may also be launched partially into orbit.
The development of hypersonic missiles has been prioritized by Kim as part of efforts to modernize the country’s nuclear arsenal.
The South Korean military reported that North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast on the same day.
This weapons test transpired shortly after Pyongyang accused the United States of escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula through a series of military exercises.
On Monday, foreign ministers from South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. convened on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York to reinforce their commitment towards peace, stability, and denuclearization in the region, as per the South Korean foreign ministry.
The developments signify a continuous cycle of weapons testing and military posturing on the peninsula, raising concerns about the stability of regional security.
